St. Petersburg is a Russian city, located at the confluence of the Neva river into the Baltic sea, making it an important transportation and commercial centre.  St Petersburg is an important commercial, industrial and cultural centre in Russia, second to Moscow. It is the north most city of  all the greatest world metropolis. It was the Russian capital for more than two hundred years. St. Petersburg is often compared to Venice, because of its various canals and bridges. Spread across 45 islands, intersected with 65 canals and connected with 342 bridges it is a true fiest for the eyes.

 

The city was founded on May 27th, 1703 by Peter the Great, Peter I Alexeyevich Romanov, the Russian Tsar. The whole city is in fact a great city museum, rich in history, tradition and cultural sights. Dostoyevsky, Gorky and Trotsky were all once inmates of the notorious Peter and Paul Fortress.

The Aurora battleship, from which the first shots were fired to signal the beginning of the October Revolution,  is anchored nearby the villa where the Bolshevik Revolutionary Headquarters was located. The villa belonged to a well-known ballerina. From a small balcony. like the one in Palace Venice in Rome, Lenin called the hungry Russians to start the revolution.

The Neva Prospect or Neva Boulevard is the main and best known street in St. Petersburg. Peter the Great planned it to be the beginning of the road to Novgorod and Moscow. The Russian writer Gogolj wrote the story "The Neva Prospect" depicting the vivid life of its inhabitants.

The Church of Spilled Blood was built on the spot where the Russian Tzar Alexander II was assassinated. The Church contains more mosaics than any other church in the world.

 

 

St. Isaac's cathedral, which was built in dedication to this patron saint of Peter the Great, once used to be the main church in Russia. It is one of largest churches with a dome in the world, it can accomodate up to 10,000 people. It has 112 granite columns, mosaic paintings and icons, ornamented marble plaques.

The Hermitage is one of the largest, most beautiful and oldest art galleries in the history of mankind. Its rich collection is exhibited throughout six buildings, of which the main building the Winter Palace used to be the official residence of the Russian Tzars.

The most important collection is the collection of Western art, including works of Michalengelo Buanaroti, leonardo da Vinci, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso...The collection was started by Catherine the Great in 1764.
