Montenegro is mentioned for the first time in the Charter of king Milutin in 1276. The country’s name in all Western European languages comes from the Italian name Monte negro. The name Montenegro (black forest) is probably derived from the fact that in medieval times Mount Lovcen, and the surrounding slopes and mountains were covered with dense, „black“ forests. Such folk etimology has been accepted by some scientists as well. What is certain is that, at first, the name Montenegro was used to refer to a narrow territory of medieval Zeta.

In the relatively small area of the Lovcen park, the majority of  historical monuments are located in the area of Njegusi and Ivanova korita.

Beautiful beaches, old monasteries and numerous relics of chivalrous history in this area.

After Venice and Dubrovnik Ulcinj had the third largest fleet and was a  favourite destination of pirates. During those times of piracy expansion, there were about  100 Negroes held as slaves in Ulcinj at  one point, who upon their release took the family names of the households they had served in, and so became law-abiding and respectable citizens.
