The capital of Serbia and my hometown, erected at the confluence of two rivers.
Belgrade lies at an intersection of the roads of  Eastern and Western Europe, at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube rivers. Belgrade is surrounded by two geographic regions, the Panonian plain, on the north, and Sumadija, on the south of the Sava and the Danube. The highest peaks in the vicinity of Belgrade are Kosmaj (628m) and Avala (511m).

Belgrade has a moderate continenatal climate. Autumns are longer than springs, with long sunny and warm spells. Winters are not very severe, with, on an average, 21 below zero temperatures. Springs are short and rainy, with abrupt outbreaks of summer. The hottest months are July and August. A typical wind in Belgrade is a south-eastern wind called kosava, common in autumn and winter, and bringing in fair and dry weather.

Archeological sites testify that first settlements on the territory of present day Belgrade date back to the fourth century B.C.  Remains of neolithic culture of prehistoric man have  been discovered at Vinča, This area was extremely favourable for settling, due to the presence of two big rivers, a fertile plain and a rich hinterland.

Being a natural intersection of land and inland waterways, Belgrade has, throughout its history, been a challenge for many nations of the region and a place where many battles and wars were fought. Belgrade has been a target of many invaders including the Huns, Bulgarians, Hungarians and Turks.
